Statutes of Limitation
A statute of limitations sets a limit of the maximum amount of time after a wrong occurs in which a person harmed by that wrong may file a lawsuit. Each state sets its own limitations periods and these periods are often different for different kinds of cases. The limitations periods for lawsuits alleging negligence are as follows.
A person must bring suit for trespass for injury to the estate or to the property of another, conversion of personal property, taking or detaining the personal property of another, personal injury, forcible entry and detainer, forcible detainer, or action for injury resulting in death not later than two years after the day the cause of action accrues.
